Recently a USA congressional subcommittee restarted investigations on secret treatments used to control individuals and groups[1]. It revealed that the CIA created “MKUltra”, which started in 1953 after other agency attempts to control and manipulate individuals’ minds. In later projects the CIA collaborated with the army, using similar tactics to control whole groups and societies. These most expensive CIA projects continued from Nazi[2] projects, sometimes using their scientists. They used chemicals and drugs to manipulate and take over minds. They discovered that control of the mind required distorting it first[3]. The objective was to reduce humans into enslaved automatons.
These were given to many involuntary and deceived subjects – prisoners, soldiers, patients, strays and children. Thousands were involved[4]. In the 1950s some uninformed truth-seeking individuals, like Ken Kesey and Allen Ginsberg, were given LSD in a CIA disguised hospital project[5]. Timothy Leary admitted in 1977 that “The LSD movement was started by the CIA.“[6]
Dosages varied. Some prisoners received multiple strong doses daily for over 77 days. It is not known if they survived. These brainwashing experiments[7] were crimes against humanity as they tortured people, some surviving to sue the USA government.
The CIA started experiments with various drugs: heroin, morphine, temazepam, and various psychoactive drugs and other pharmaceutics[8]. Different techniques were tried, like injecting one arm with barbiturates and the other amphetamines. Later MKUltra used mainly LSD, buying the entire stock of Sandoz Laboratories, its originator [9].
Experiments were widely carried out in hospitals, CIA safe houses, brothels, poor communities, and other institutions worldwide. Known guineapigs included Americans, Canadians, French, Japanese, Filipinos and Germans[10]. Remaining official records indicate tests continued till 1973.
Detailed information is still missing. When the 1973 investigation started, Richard Helms, the head of the CIA, obstructed lawful investigations. He illegally ordered the destruction of all MKUltra documents. After Watergate, a few papers were found due to misfiling. Congressional hearings started in1976, then closed quickly. Silence prevailed. Now, prompted by successful cases suing for damages, more information has become available[11]. Politics restarting formal preliminary hearings. Canadians had made earlier investigations. In 1984 a TV documentary programme revealed victims’ stories[12]. An earlier protest by Velma Orlikow, wife of an MP, had carried some weight and had been news, but its information was soon buried[13].
While it is unknown if these experiments continue, its “probability is certain”[14] under a new name. Previous research is still available with additional possibilities of using new techniques such as brain nanobots, microchips, implants and assorted drugs with modern distribution systems.
While this secrecy fuels the wildest fantasies, we should remain vigilant and exercise caution around simplistic solutions, especially if they include intoxicants. We, as part of small, trusted groups, need to be clear about what deceptions continue. We know that 90% of the press is controlled by right wing wealth[15], and we now see that their controlling arsenal includes other tactics besides media lies and armed forces.
